Acute:

Pointed or sharp in shape.

Adnate:

Of the gills - Bluntly attached to the stem.

Adnexed:

Of the gills - Attached to the stem in an ascending manner.

Agar:

A gelatine derived from seaweed and used in a sterile spore or tissue culture.

Agaricales:

Order of mushrooms which have true gills.

Amyloid:

The bluish reaction of the flesh or the spores of a mushroom when bruised (Melzer's iodine).

Anastomosis (anastomoses pl.):

A clockwise fusion of hyphal systems that form a mesh or network of mycelia.

Angstrom:

1 ten thousandth of a micron.

Annular:

Appearing as a ring-like zone as in a annulaus.

Annulaus:

The partial remnant's of the veil tissue that are left adhering to the stem and forming a membranous collar or ring around it.

Apex:

The highest point or tip.

Apiculus:

The hilar appendix, a nipple-shaped projection with which a spore is attached to the strerigmata of the basidium.

Appendiculate:

Fragments of hanging tissue.

Appressed:

Flattened.

Ascomycetes:

Fungi group that have sexual spores in sacs. (asci)

Ascus(asci pl.):

The sac in which eight spores are formed in the perfect stage of ascomycetous fungi.

Autoclave:

A steam pressurised container used to sanitise or pasteurize a media.
